Notquite “dead” enough to be Death Industrial, certainly not flamboyantenough to be Harsh Noise, in a time when sub-sub-sub categories ruleRegosphere sits uneasily. Here, though, Andrew Quitter does lean moreto the former than usual. This album, released for a US tour, featuresthe title track, a one-sitting home recording without overdubs ofmaterial played live on the tour. The theme of the album being the nowlegendary BP oil spill in the Gulf Of Mexico. The titular track on sideone blending carefully modulated hissing layers of white noise withslow pulsing synth tracks together before relaxing down, then buildingup again to the sounds of more synth pulses and background sirensounds, which themselves fade out to make room for a soft, clunkingmetallic rhythm and yet more hissing, grainy static. It's the secondpart of this I think works the best; the first part is evocative butthe second works more aesthetically. Throughout the whole, though,there is a precise pacing and a nice, relaxed under-use of sounds asopposed to flogging things to death. In fact, it sounds very much likea live piece, in that the various elements are introduced, used andthen faded out more robustly then one normally would with the luxury oftime at home. However it's not cluttered with a million ideas, ratherit's a specific, conceptual spiral. Side two continues the imagery with“Bottom Kill”, based on sickly sounding synth pulses and muggy rushingsounds which are difficult to determine; the mix is somewhat more onedimensional but the end effect is more psychedelic and suggestive, yetmore immediate. To me it sounds more like a prehistoric swamp than amodern ocean floor ruined by crude oil. It's a somewhat hypnoticlisten. The rhythmic pulsing of the static sounds, which suggestshortwave radio rather than synth white noises, come in later in thetrack after their sedimental surrounding of the whole. A more definedkeyboard chord heralds “Tar On The Beach”, a sinister, movie-soundtrackanti-melody backing the scratching hiss and odd chiming sound that allfeels covered with a mucky film of scum. The rushing ocean sound isdominant here. The distracting, psychedelic hypnotism of the formerpiece is carried on here. Both these spirals have an odd “not quitethere” quality which, if listened to softly in the right light, couldwell replace drugs.

Crucial Blast review for Glass Coffin / Tombstalker Split Casette

The newest label to stoke the flames of my cassette lust is Husk Records, a tiny imprint run by Josh Lay from Cadaver In Drag, also known for his own solo blackened psych/drone/industrial stuff. He's released a variety of stuff on Husk, ranging from the blacknoise of Wilt to a Cadaver In Drag tape full of blasted irradiated sludge to the terrifying electro-acoustic soundscapes of Teeth Collection, but the most metal tape he's put out has got to be this double-edged blast of vile Kentucky black metal, featuring Josh Lay's own black metal alter-ego Glass Coffin on one side and Lexington blackthrashers Tombstalker on the other.
Josh Lay's loner black metal band Glass Coffin unleashes three tracks on the first side, and it's gnarly, low-fi, totally MANGLED black metal puke. These jams (which have titles like "A Nightmare Majestic", "My Hammer Will Decide My Fate" and "Serpent Of Cold Stone") are blackened bestial filth, a primitive blast of ripping thrash riffs, manic double-picked tremolo shred, vomitous goat-howls drenched in reverb, and stumbling, sloppy, BRUTAL drumming that goes from blastbeat mayhem to pounding caveman stomp to putrid doom-laden trudge, and splatters sloppy atonal solos over the whole assault. Don't let the psych-lookin' tape cover fool you - this is savage fucked-up black hate flecked with bits of weird atavistic/demonic medieval folk melody, mutated and cloven-hoofed a la early Beherit, Sarcafago, and early Darkthrone...awesome!
Then the flipside features the ghastly blackthrash of the awesomely named Tombstalker, who are pretty ripping themselves. The two tracks, "Grieving Abyss" and "Eternal Enslavement", are a mix of gnarled Scandinavian-style crust and violent blackened thrash, the vocalist shredding his throat in a fury of hoarse, harsh rasping and bestial guttural bellowing, crushing double-bass drumming, and some KILLER riffs slashing through the low-fi, brutal blackened heaviness. This band RULES, like a sloppy, alchohol fueled meeting of Bolt Thrower and Bestial Mockery jamming Dis-core in a Kentucky garage.
I've been blasting this in the C-Blast company truck all week...it rules! Comes in a splattery handmade cover, limited to one hundred numbered copies.

Lately I've been drinking to a few Bands coming outta Husk Records. Check em' out.

Glass Coffin/ Tombstalker - there's only 6 copies left of this split cassette for a reason. Because it's fucking brutal. Just listening to Glass Coffin will make your skin start to rot. Tombstalker was born and breed on burnt Churches and Viking corpses. Death Metal at its finest.

Developer - Static Creep Noise, Great soundtrack for any movie scary as all Hell. I actually had to go lock my doors. Poltergeist meets Family Therapy. The language of the Varicose Vein. The cover alone says it all. Sweet dreams.

‘She Walks The Night’ is a rare treat from Josh Lay’s Husk Records - not that he isn’t keeping busy, we just never hear from him direct - and the label’s first piece of vinyl. Keeler and Hall, coming off a hectic 2009, are less of a rarity in the Wilt vehicle even when it comes to vinyl, as last year saw a split with Prurient on Bloodlust!, among many mentionable tapes. Still, the release at hand is an unmistakable act of curatorial love on Lay’s behalf, as any ambient 7” no doubt must: more Poe than Plan 9, the album stirs with pathos, half fear and half longing, and conveys this with so much atmosphere that the objects appear only through psychopathic want and not sense. The title track is admittedly gothic like a Vincent Price rendition with howling, clattering, and a rich fog of whole organ chords blow about the track; however, the sentiment remains unsettled, that is, where is “she” and where is this representation? The possibilities become more vexing when we consider the camera’s position as it moves through this sonic environment, that it walks, that is, I the listener walks, willed or no. The B side contains two brief tracks of a more stationary, therefore objective experience – “Cold Grave” and “Haunting the Chapel” – the first a guitar-singed howl, half-vacant, half-revelatory as it resonates handsomely despite a drooling loop by no means self-evident, the second a murkier fume of deep, two-chord bass grumblings and tinny noise carving deeper the grooves on the vinyl. Though the titling is likely description enough, the sounds don’t always follow from logic, and repeat listens are prompted by this fact alone (of course tastes should have dark ambient fans flipping this to no ends). For that half of you who pick up the extended edition which comes with a bonus cassette, you will find an extra twenty minutes of material to help decipher the riddle of the too-brief record. This includes the suggestions “Invocation of the Bride”, “She Lives”, and the likely lynchpin “SVF”; the tapes ends with the side long “She Walks The Night (Reprise)”, which, at twice the length of the centerpiece, extensively renders the terrain to reveal more mundane spaces in this realm of nocturnal insects, wooden floors, clocks (which though startling, would ring regardless), and some toiling which appears less than malicious. At various stages of development, these tracks vary in length and, while clearly edited-down and mixed, feature what feels like rawer takes of guitar, organ, and some unexpected samples which cut raggedly into the ghoulish tone which is so well-conveyed. 200 copies on black vinyl (100 with the cassette). Example: " Dude I was fuckin' diggin' around in the tape bin and I found fuckin' Gang Green Older... Budweiser tape for 15 cents"! (Beer is the theme here)
Here for Beer is that last cold beer at the bottom of the cooler. That one you hoped was there, but ya knew the odds were bad. But then your hand grabs it and you just grin.
If you enjoy the Gospel of Suicidal Tendencies, Fang and Black Flag you will smile and have flashbacks of Storage Units , Garages, Dead End Roads, Random Farms, Kegs, Glue, Acid, Speed, Blood, Skateboards, Trash, Cigarettes, Donuts, 7 Eleven Microwave Burritos, Cemeteries, Visions of Death, Blasphemy, Pure Angst, Fire Pits, 40 oz. of anything that will fuck you up, Vodka, Black Outs, Hog tied and beaten by Cops, Pissed on while you sleep, Piss on someone while they sleep and hated Brett Michaels then and now. You will enjoy this tape. Did I mention it's only two dudes? I owe Josh Lay and Morgan Rankin a beer.

Wilt - She Walks The Night (Husk, 2010)

Oooh Wilt. Did you really think that starting your new 7" off with howling wolves was a good idea? AWESOME. Just making sure we're on the same page.
She Walks The Night is a new piece of mini vinyl, the first 100 of which came with a bonus cassette (which is actually twice as long as the 7"). And these tunes are some of the bleakest minimal black metal noise to ever grace my turntable. Murky, desolate, and totally fucking pitiful, the type of sounds you hear wandering through a forgotten zombie infested graveyard in the middle of the night while fog rolls across the moon.

The tape has an extra 4 tracks, one of which is a reprise of the title track opening the vinyl, and it's more of the same. Which is a good thing, obviously. Creepy black ambience, Undead shuffling through empty mausoleums, the leathery flapping of bat wings, earth rumbling thunder, church bells ringing in the distance, the sound of utter hopelessness and grim filth.

Not sure if this is still available with the companion tape but it should be because it hasn't been out very long. Either way though, She Walks The Night is fucking essential for your collection of necrotic ambient 7 inches. Husk totally rules for putting this out

Kentucky native Josh Lay seems to be a busy man. He single handedly runs Husk Recordings and performs all duties in his self professed ‘true heathen bedroom black metal band’, Glass Coffin. Good to know the term is not being used in derogatory terms as it seems to be the consensus. Regardless, this split truly sounds the part.

On the label side, Lay’s got a few limited cassette releases I would love to get a hold of; especially the split between Plague of Mankind and Apochryphal Revelations and the Al Qaeda D/A/A/D split. Also in the label’s catalogue we can find some electronic releases that Josh has put out under his own name.

But that side of Josh doesn’t seem to have affected the sound of Glass Coffin who here present us three tracks of the lowest fidelity possible. All of course, without letting the sound / noise delve too much into mud or static. I haven’t had the pleasure of listening to the 2009 demo Blood of a Godless Moon, but on their half of this split, Lay shows plenty of skills. The first song “A Nightmare Majestic” is enough to let you know that musically, Glass Coffin have nothing to envy anyone. There is a shrill sound, a cold vibe, sloppy playing and great song construction. All of course, delivered with the most vitriolic sense of misanthropy.

Tombstalker on the other hand is a foursome also from Kentucky and their two songs in this split were also included in their 2009 demo. Here is the thing with tapes; sometimes it’s hard to tell whether your copy is fucked up. The recording of these two songs is actually less lo fi and more professional. So is the playing, with cool buildups, killer riffage, colorful drumming et al but for some reason, it seems like there was an issue with the duplication, where every instrument has been muted. Get past that, turn a deaf ear to the dominant white noise and what we get is a pretty cool thrash death metal band that could fuck in the ass a couple of times most of those revivalist thrash metal bands.
